Trevor McDonald Set Up Us The Bomb

by on May.10, 2010, under Games vs "Science", Somebody Set Up Us The Bomb

The other day I saw a show which really angered me, and it was a Trevor McDonald program. He sent his journalist out to try and convince everyone that computer games breed violence. It was attached to some fucking stupid statistic like 70% of gamers pertain towards deviance. This reprehensibly stupid claim refers to the time when some kid murdered some other kid and the whole world blamed it on the game “Manhunt”.

For a start the game is an 18 ceritifcate, so how a 15 year old kid acquired it surely is the irresponsible parenting. Having said that, I got the original Grand Theft Auto when I was 14 and I still haven’t stolen a car yet. I also got Mortal Kombat at a young age, but I still haven’t torn someone’s spine out of their body….

Does all our base are belong to Trevor?

I was in Game the other day and I heard the whimsical whimperings of a small child who was trying to encourage his parents into buying a copy of Just Cause 2. While that game is only a 15, that game contains one HELL of a lot of bullets and quite frankly is not suitable for a child who clearly isn’t mature enough to understand the difference of fiction and reality. True that game was almost silly in places and while a foolish parent would think this was suitable, for a child about eight years old, this is definitely not the case. Besides, parents these days use it as a way of keeping the kids quiet but certainly the case was when I was that age, the graphics were about 16 bit so there was no way that I could have confused it with reality. I also wasn’t stuck on it 24/7 so it wasn’t quite the brainwashing that the program suggested.

My point is blaming things like computer games is a quick and dirty way out from crap parents avoiding the fact that they are totally irresponsible. My parents let me have these games as soon as they knew I could understand the difference between reality and fantasy. So yeah, if you have a pathologically unstable child, Manhunt 2 is hardly a perfect gift for Christmas is it? But then again, I’ve heard that’s been banned….

We’ve had it a lot online when we’ve been playing something like GTA4 and there’s small kids on it and you do think to yourself that there’s no way that a young child should be getting excited about shooting prostitutes. Get to our age and it’s fine! lol.

I like it when people make up their own minds, not regurgitate something they had rammed down their throats by some dickhead who it too busy basking in the sunshine they think is coming out of their arse. In summation, I wouldn’t classify any of my friends as violent criminals much like Trevor McDonald seems to portray and I feel it’s utterly puerile to base a blanket accusation based on a handful of idiots. Grand Theft Auto has sold millions of copies and I still haven’t seen any evidence of this veritable holocaust they’ve been making out is happening.

Agreed, I do think parenting plays a part, in knowing their children well enough in order to make an informed decision on whether exposing them to an airport full of innocents getting massacred by terrorists, or whether its safer to just let them loose on a game like Little Big Planet. My Dad tried keeping me away from Command and COnquer, but oh well these things happen. I have however not gone and commanded an entire Allied forace against a Soviet force full of Tesla troops.

But consider – I think half the shit you see on TELEVISION and FILM nowadays is twice as bad as what is presented in video games. It is absolutely preposterous to think video games corrupt the minds of youth today.

    Maybe Trevor should get signal.

May I add, I meant to say “…to think video games ALONE corrupt the minds…”
