SEGA’s marketing department hit the sherry early…

by on Nov.24, 2010, under Gamer Rages

The other day I was playing a demo for the new game Vanquish on the Xbox 360 and by all accounts I thought it looked really good. A nice third person manic shooter which has more things flying through the air than a tomato sale at a 50 Cent gig. I’ve heard that this game hasn’t been selling so well and since they’d be desperate for Xmas sales, I thought I’d have a browse online.

I stumbled across them selling it on Play.com (not that I’d order it from there because I’d want to play it before Xmas 2011) when I noticed something on the search results:

Do my eyes deceive me? Or is that a bit steep?

Is that seriously selling essentially two games for £200?? Why is that so much? Yes ok it has a lenticular sleeve so it essentially has a 3D case, but that warrant it being the same price as a brand new 360 Elite? If it came with a 2′ x 3′ frame for your 3D picture then fair enough, but just the size of a DVD sleeve? It’s a bit steep. And why is it £50 more on the Xbox? If you consider a brand new game is £40 brand new on release, you could buy 5 brand new games rather than a game 2 months old with a crap game over a year old and a 3D case. You do the maths.

Ok so it comes with Bayonetta, which is essentially a poor man’s God of War with a pornographic witch who has rather mental hair, but still I’m not sure if that can justify such a huge asking price. Rock Band 3 was £100 but at least that came with a MIDI compatible keytar! I really hope this is a typo on Play.com’s part, otherwise SEGA, who are marketing this for Platinum games, have hit the sherry way too early for Christmas!

On second inspection, buying the game alone without Bayonetta is £30, making the bolt on of having Bayonetta costing you £170! I haven’t seen a game sold for so much since I was a kid and Neo Geo games were £150 a pop for a coin-op conversion! Please, somebody out there tell me this is a hilarious mistake! Some sources suggest it also comes with a limted edition figurine, but for over £100, I’d want a life size soldier and working assault rifle!

Ooh very pretty!
