Dots! More Dots!

The new World of Warcraft is coming out in time for Christmas as I saw in a television advert the other day. Personally, despite being a fan of RPG games, I’ve never really got into that series, possibly because I don’t agree with paying for a game once you’ve already bought it. I did however download a demo to see what the fuss was about and I guess that I may have sandboxed a little too much because within five minutes I was slain, by a level 5 owl. WTF? I then spent the next 10 minutes of my existence floating about as a blue orb watching other random people playing. Yes, I know you can say to me that if I allowed myself more time to get into it I could have enjoyed it more but as far as RPGs go, I’ll just stick with Final Fantasy (with the exception of 13) or Morrowind.

What WoW has brought us in terms of culture is amusement. We now have a blanket stereotype of a WoW player, that is an emaciated albino who has no social skills. Kind of an evolution from your typical adolescent nerd. I know in other articles I’ve said that games don’t cause aggression, just possibly exacerbate it, well here is a personal favourite of mine which Freqmaster showed me years ago and it still makes me laugh now:

It did take me a while to work out that DOTS actually stands for Damage over time, but I have no idea what a whelp is or what DKP is, or how you can get -50! Either way, this for me is a part of video game legacy because many years on, it’s still dead funny. It just goes to show that no matter what the game, over competitiveness makes you into a bit of a burke when you take something too seriously. Yes Bear I’m including getting fired from Feyenoord in ChampMan01 in that!
