[Group Stage] England 1 – 0 Slovenia

by on Jun.28, 2010, under International Football

After an abysmal start to the World Cup campaign, England badly needed the result against Slovenia. A win and we were definitely through to the last 16. Slovenia were on form, having beaten Algeria 1-0 and getting a 2-2 draw with the USA had them top of the group and playing well.

So this was it, Capello made some changes to the side, James Milner comes in on the right for Aaron Lennon and Jermaine Defoe replaced the docile and ineffective Emile Heskey to add some much needed pace up front. This proved to be a more solid formula as in the 19th minute it was a James Milner cross into the 6 yard box and Jermaine Defoe got on the end of it to make the score 1-0.

There was an improvement from the Algeria game in that England did actually threaten the goal and had plenty of chances. Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard should have scored in the first half but Lampard’s effort way off target despite being an empty net and Gerrard’s shot was saved brilliantly by Handanovic.

Rooney also had a 1-on-1 attempt in the second half but had it tipped onto the post by the keeper again. England threatened but dwindled towards the end of the second half with Rooney coming off for Joe Cole ineffectually and eventually Defoe being replaced by Heskey, who unsurprisingly did absoultely nothing.

So 1-0 it finished with a rather unconvincing win for England who finished second in the group as the USA scored a 92nd minute winner against Algeria. The Germans awaited in the second round.
