Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys

by on Feb.24, 2012, under International Football

For those of you unfamiliar with the Argentine Premier League (not that I’m an expert), you may or may not have heard of the team Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys. I only have from playing Championship Manager for many years and I’ve always found the fact there’s a club just called Newell’s Old Boys to be quite bizarre; more bizarre than Young Boys Berne in the Swiss League, or Flexys Cefn Druids in the Welsh League.

But for me more hilariously is the badge:

Yes I agree it’s quite childish that I find the badge funny, and while it would be more appropriate with sponsoring a Manchester United kit, this badge still make me laugh. Coupled with the fact that their nickname is La Lepra, which “the leprosy”, of which I cannot possibly fathom how that could be an apt or even inspiring nickname. They have had several famous players on their books such as Gabriel Batistuta and Gabriel Heinze, ironically both of these players of whom I’d describe as being nobs!
